The Former President's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's Real Danger: Economic Decline.

The recent US national security strategy presents a flawed view of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "progressive" policies pose an grave threat to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective is based on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The true challenge facing the EU is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Growth Divide Between Europe and the US

The data paint a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, while a mere 13.5% increase for the EU. Over this time, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Today, about half of the world’s top fifty technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Deficit: A Critical Question

The growing economic gap is driven by superior productivity growth in the US, largely due to technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at over $10bn, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap raises a vital question: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is Europe stand? Most analysts agree it is largely a contest between two involving the United States and China, with Europe entering at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

Several key factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a genuine unified investment market, a factor that caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hamper European business. A US startup can introduce a service under one set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is split among twenty-seven different national systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, one can find reasons for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to advance substantial change. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the single market point to the need for major changes.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, these assets might enable far greater levels of commercial innovation.

Europe still possesses significant strengths: skilled human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class labs. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations could unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly increase economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a critical moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been steady. However, if it fails to take decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
